Why is your nose always blocked?

In everyday life, a blocked nose (nasal congestion) is a common symptom. For nasal congestion, nasal congestion attack, the taste can be really bad, like being pinched nose, every breath as if playing tug-of-war with the air.

Although physiological nasal congestion may relieve itself, intractable nasal congestion caused by pathological changes in the nasal cavity may have a serious impact on our work, study and life, and we should pay more attention to it.

Why is sometimes only one nostril blocked? How does the child adenoid hypertrophy cause nasal congestion? Is it really safe to spray hormones… To find out, look below.

01 Both nostrils cannot be ventilated at the same time

1 Acute rhinitis

This is the most common cause of bilateral nasal congestion. Patients often have a runny nose. If there is also a large discharge of pus nose and headache symptoms, it is likely to be acute rhinitis with a brief acute sinusitis.

Solutions: Short-term use of drugs that can shrink the nasal mucosa, such as nasal drops and sprays containing ephedrine or hydroxymethazoline.

Note: Since long-term use of these drugs can easily cause drug-induced rhinitis, it is recommended that continuous use not exceed 1 week.

2.Chronic rhinitis

It mainly occurs in the nasal mucosa or inferior turbinate region. These patients may experience intermittent nasal congestion throughout the year.

For example, patients with vasomotor rhinitis in chronic rhinitis often have nasal congestion after changes in cold and hot temperature. Patients with allergic rhinitis often have seasonal nasal congestion, which is more common in spring and autumn. Such patients may also react to allergens such as dust, cats and dogs, pollen, dust mites, and fungi.

Coping methods: Patients with vasomotor rhinitis should try to avoid causes, such as avoiding sudden changes in temperature, exposure to inhaled irritating gases, and large mood swings. Allergic rhinitis patients should try to stay away from allergens.

Patients with chronic rhinitis can regularly use nasal spray hormone therapy for 1 to 2 weeks during the onset of the disease. If nasal spray hormones are not effective, consider a combination of oral or nasal spray antihistamines (i.e., allergy medications) for treatment.

Reminder: Only allergic rhinitis patients with dust mites as allergens can try to go to the hospital for desensitization treatment. There is also a group of chronic rhinitis patients with nasal septum deviation. If medication does not work, surgery to correct a deviated septum may be considered.

3 Chronic sinusitis Chronic sinusitis

It mainly occurs in the sinuses, and is commonly found in the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses.

Treatment: Nasal spray hormone combined with nasal discharge drugs, such as those containing eucalyptus pinine or myrtle oil, and nasal irrigation.

Warning: If the nasal polyp has overgrown the common nasal passage, resulting in the drug is not effective, should be treated as soon as possible.

4 Nasopharyngeal lesions

Nasopharyngeal lesions can cause persistent nasal congestion. Adenoid hypertrophy is one of the most common causes of nasal congestion in children under 10 years of age.

Management: Children with adenoid hypertrophy usually have symptoms of chronic rhinitis and need to be evaluated by a doctor to formulate a treatment plan (including possible medication or surgery).

For adults with nasopharyngeal lesions, nasal endoscopy is routinely performed. Benign neoplasms of the nasopharynx are usually recommended for surgical removal, while suspected malignant neoplasms require a surgical biopsy as soon as possible for a definitive diagnosis.

Reminder: Once the nature of the malignancy has been confirmed, radiation therapy is usually the preferred treatment.

02 One side of the nose is stuffy, the other side is normal

This condition is commonly seen in unilateral nasal and sinusoidal lesions, and the main causes include odontogenic infection of the sinuses, fungal sinusitis, posterior nostril polyps, and nasal and sinusoidal tumors.

Management: If persistent unilateral nasal congestion occurs, seek medical attention as soon as possible to avoid missing potential tumor lesions, and decide whether to take medical or surgical treatment depending on the nature of the lesion.

03 Nasal congestion prevention and treatment pay attention

Strengthen physical exercise

Strengthen physical exercise, maintain a balanced diet and adequate sleep.

Allergen free

Patients with vasomotor rhinitis should keep warm when the weather turns cool. People with allergic rhinitis can wash their nose with a spray saline solution daily and try to avoid contact with known allergens.

Use nasal spray hormones scientifically

In fact, nasal spray hormones are quite safe and can be used for a long time according to the needs of the condition. However, long-term use of nasal spray hormones may cause drying or erosion of the nasal mucosa, as well as a small amount of nasal bleeding and other side effects. In this case, the medication can be suspended for a period of time, and the nasal mucosa can be lubricated with paraffin oil nasal drops.
